Fortunately for West Virginia Democrats, their choice in the special Aug. 28 primary election for the U.S. Senate is obvious: Gov. Joe Manchin.
The death of former Sen. Robert Byrd, D-W.Va., this summer forced state legislators to set special elections to fill the vacancy on a long-term basis. Nominees for the seat will be chosen Aug. 28. The winner will be selected in the Nov. 2 general election.
Because of the tight election schedule, voters have not had much time to consider the candidates. They really don't need it. Manchin's record as governor makes it clear he is the best Democrat candidate for the Senate.
Manchin is one of three Democrats seeking the party's nomination. During his time as governor, Manchin has earned West Virginians' trust on a key issue - government spending. A dose of the fiscal discipline the governor, with legislators' help, has established in our state would do a world of good in Washington.
On many other issues, the governor also has represented the values and needs of his fellow Mountain State residents. For example, he stands firmly and unequivocally against attempts to destroy the coal industry.
Like the late Sen. Byrd, Manchin has solid West Virginia values. They, too, would be a welcome change in Washington.
An endorsement of Manchin is not really necessary, because he is going to win next Saturday - and deservedly so. Manchin has been a good governor - conservative on issues including fiscal policy, trial lawyers, energy and education. The real challenge for a Democrat, if elected to the Senate, will be to balance the need to be accepted and promoted by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and other ultra-liberals, on the one hand, and properly representing what is best for West Virginia and the country on the other hand.
That is the challenge Gov. Manchin will face if he is chosen by voters in November.
